I actually have a thread in the forum now waiting for an answer. The question I asked was what proxy server do you guys recommend. I had not considered, however, encrypting the data. So, you're saying that I should set up the proxy server, then SSH in, forward the port that the proxy server listens to (which I hope will not be the default), leave the firewall as-is, and then set the proxy settings on my client machine here at work to 127.0.0.1?

Yeah, why not. I've never personally done it, but you can tunnel pretty much anything as long as you are not running that service on your localhost, and even then there's ways around that. So I think you're right on track. Get the proxy server that is recommended and say you have it listening on port 8080. Then you could SSH to your linux box, and forward L8080 to localhost:8080, that is, assuming your proxy is running on the same box that your SSH server is running on. If it's not, then it'd be forward L8080 to <internal IP of proxy>:8080

Keep me posted if you do this and how it goes since I'm curious of the outcome. If you don't want to post here, you can email me at linuxquestions AT ausanders DOT com.

Good luck!

[ You just want to VNC into a Windows box on your internal LAN at home right? If so, why not use Remote Desktop tunneled over VNC?

Hi!

OK - is that easier?

Well, Remote Desktop is something that's already there and nothing needs to be installed. Normally, I would use VNC instead of RDP for security reasons, but since we'll be encrypting the traffic over SSH, go with RDP.

So go here to see how to do it: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=258495

Good luck!
