howto get/send mails using mutt-like apps

Hi.. I'm just trying to use mutt or pine to get and
send mail from/to hotmail and gmail.. (this box is a single-user
zipslack distro. don't need to be a mailserver(??) nor nothing
with a similar name... :-/ ).
exist any -really- simple way to configure such apps to do the
job, or do I need to deal with 'sendmail' which I cannot understand
what it's all about...?
very thanks
