how to setup SMTP server in REdhat 9.0

We are moving from web-hosting based email server to our own server,
so we have set up own own, while it is relatively easy to configure mail
client like OutLook etc. for working with a web-hosting based email server,
we have 2 questions wanna get helps from you guys:

1. In redhat 9.0, which service needs to be enabled to set up SMTP server?

2. Our server is outside our LAN, and our LAN has an internal server with
a proxy in squid, in that case, how to configure our mail client like
OutLook to make it woking like without the proxy?

Thx,
HTM

u need a MTA (mail transport agent). sendmail, postfix, qmail. u must choose one of them. configuration of sendmail is hard. as i know qmail is the best MTA. postfix is easier to configure.
u may install sendmail or postfix from your redhat cds.

i use qmail..

if u want to install qmail u must search the docs to install. u should check these sites to install qmail. www.qmailtoaster.com www.qmailrocks.org
u can choose toaster rpm pakets. it s easy to install and uninstall.

2 - your clients must reach the pop3 (tcp 110) and smtp (tcp 25) ports of email server, if u wanna use outlook. u can do that with iptables. i need more info about your network to explain how to do that

Besides Qmail

Thx for your great answer, I have a few remaining question:

1. Besides Qmail, do I need VPOmail and Courier IMAP? I got that
based on a paper by Joe Stump published at www.linuxdevcenter.com
"Building an Advanced Mail Server"

2. Is Squierremail necessary?

3. Do I need SpamAssassin, Procmail and QmailScanner?

I am wondering what is a base set for server side besides Qmail?
and what is the base set of client side, anything like Outlook will work?
Since we have no control on client side as any of our customers might
get our e-mail, actually we have to be quite responsible to cover
every case at client side

I am reading a paper named Life with qmail from www.lifewithqmail.org, will
that enough? I definitely will get the toster rpm and install qmail from there

BTW wat is the most valuable doc/tutorial/howto you read before
you make your email server running on Redhat server?

Too many questions,

Thx a ton,
HTM
