what do I need to setup mail server?

Hi!
I got a domain name and I want to setup email server. I have a Linu box running Slackware 10.2, but I have no idea what software do I need to make this running.. I know that I can use popa3d as pop3 server, but I don't know about smtp and what other software I need to get this running. Any suggestions please? Thank you!

As in, a couple hour install CD (making sure to choose the correct servers in the installer); it's practically working with minor configs after the install. Also, if you're planning on serving the mail from behind a cable/dsl modem it's almost certain that the mail server ports are blocked by your ISP.

Why would one have to install a mail server 'from scratch' in linux? Why not just install the appropriate slack packages?

As for the original question, you need a Mail Transfer Agent (MTA), your smtp daemon; and you need a way to store your mail and users. Some common daemons are sendmail, qmail, or postfix. Common methods of storage are system users, mbox, mailbox, or dbmail + sql.

If you use system users, then after you install your mail server, all you have to do is set the domain to receive mail for, any aliases, and you're good to go.

Thanks.

and when i try to download with outlook express it sais:
"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: '192.168.0.1 (1)', Server: '192.168.0.1', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"
