Question How to set up Linux NTP server

Hi
i want to set up a Linux Fedora Machine as NTP server & other machine as NTP Client.
My NTP Server IP ( 192.168.48.105)
NTP Client IP ( 192.168.48.120).

Can u tell what is ntp.conf file for the above problem.
whether i need to modify any other files.

Thanks in advance

your ntp.conf could look like this:

-----

#simple ntpd config file

server ntp1.server.com
server ntp2.server.com
server ntp3.server.com

driftfile /etc/ntp.drift

-----

where ntp1-3.server.com are ntp servers on the net

the driftfile declaration computes the error in the frequency of the clock on your computer. i won't go into details, but basically leave that setting in your ntp.conf as it is useful in keeping your time closely synchronized :P

Hi

On your ntp client your ntp.conf should contain

driftfile /var/lib/ntp/drift/ntp.drift # path for drift file

logfile /var/log/ntp # alternate log file
server your_server_name_or_ip

on your ntp server I suggest you run openntpd see www.openntpd.org

I downloaded openntpd-3.6.1p1, compiled under suse9.0 and worked ok after compile and install

Finally I transferred to my smoothwall box and now provides time services for all my network

best of luck

That's what a ntp client daemon does. Start the service up and it will sync with the server depending upon ntp.conf.

On Fed/RH.

chkconfig ntp on
service ntp start

You can use ntpdate to do the initial sync.

But my machine (192.168.48.120) is not synchronizing with server(192.168.48.105).
Client is syncronizing with server only while starting ntpd Daemon. When i changed time at server. Client machine time is not changed as with time of server.

ntp.conf ( Client )
restrict 192.168.48.105 mask 255.255.255.0 nomodify notrap noquery
server 192.168.48.105
fudge 127.127.1.0 stratum 10
driftfile /var/lib/ntp/drift
broadcastdelay 0.008
authenticate no
keys /etc/ntp/keys

Is there any changes to be done to sync automatically or periodically check for time.

Thanks in advance
