How to (re)start eth0?

I'm sure this is a silly question but none the less I can't find an answer. I occasionally neglect to plug in the ethernet cable before starting my laptop which is running RH AS 3.0. On these occasions, I can't figure out how to start eth0 after the fact. I try 'ifconfig eth0 up' and there is no error but I still can't send/recieve any data. If anyone could point this new user in the right direction I'd really appreciate it!

as a user, at least in Fedora, /sbin is not included in the "path". So to run as a user use /sbin/ifup eth0.

I added the path statement to /home/username/.bash_profile so I wouldent have to type /sbin before these types of commands.
