how to manager the log files?


Hey! All,
How to manager the logs file? for example http, ftp, ssh....
Where I can know it was storing? How to check it?...

and I would know how many ppls to access my pc before few day..? Which ip alway access to it...?

check the files in /var/log directory. generally log files are stored in this directory.

generally all of deamons generate log files. and generally they store logs in that directory. u can change the config file of that deamon to produce more detailed logs. this option is generally "loglevel".

u can also say iptables to generate logs for network activity for specific ports. but check the daemon logs first. it generally stores information u can need in logs.

example for iptables log: all input to http port will be written in /var/log/messegaes file (this is system log file)
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j LOG --log-prefix " http incoming="
