how to make ip visible to the world

I am running Fedora Core 5,
and I want someone overseas to `see' my linux box here at
home and install some software. My internet service provider
is Earthlink, and I live in the USA. Well, sshd is running
and I added my friend in Dublin as a user, and I could ping
my box from another computer attached to my router at home.
I ran ifconfig on my box and emailed the inet addr. to
my friend in Dublin, but he couldn't
ping it. So I don't know what to do. Should I have given
him the Bcast address? And what is the inet6 addr ?

I am pretty naive
when it comes to networking issues. Does anyone have any advice? I need to know how to make my ip address visible to
the outside world, if only for a short time.

Sincerely,
Greg

What you need to do is find out what IP address is assigned to your modem, cable modem, or DSL modem (depending on which is being used). If it's a regular dialup modem, you should see a ppp0 address when you do ifconfig. If it's cable or DSL, you need to find out how to see your IP address on them. Hint: there's usually a web based configuration page you can go to that will tell you the IP address assigned.

Now, if the router is in between your machine and the modem, you'll also have to forward port 22 on the router to the address you get from ifconfig on the computer (eth0). This should also be accomplished via a web interface to your router.
