How to get Windows and Linux communicating to each other w/ switch.

I have a Windows 2000 PC and Redhat 9 PC both connected to a switch (ethernet cables). How do I get them to communicate with each other? For example, on the Linux machine I want to be able to type:

ping <windows pc IP>

And then it would work. I eventually want to be able to send messages from the Linux PC to the Windows PC (BOOTP or TFTP request for example).

Thanks!

I am assuming there is no source of DHCP here, so you just need to configure both machines with static IP addresses. Say 192.168.1.1 for one machine, and 192.168.1.2 for the other.
