How to connect ubuntu computers into LAN

I would like to know if how can I setup computers installed with hardy heron into LAN.

We have 20 computers in our office. 9 are installed with winXP and the rest are ubuntu hardy heron. Ubuntu computers can connect to winXP computers. The problems are:

1. winXP computers cannot connect to ubuntu computers
2. ubuntu computer cannot connect to other ubuntu computers

How can I setup those computer to share files?

Thanks in advance.

Can't connect, how? Can't ping? SMB file share? We need more information to help diagnose this. You say share files. What protocol are you using?

Install Samba server on your Ubuntu systems. You will need to configure Samba, then you will be able to share files from linux to XP systems.

If you want file sharing, then you can use Samba or you can install NFS and share files. Linux to linux, NFS is much simpler and faster than Samba. You may want to look into security. Samba does provide better security than NFS. With a small setup like this, NFS is probably secure enough.

Look in the Tutorials, Networking section for How-to's for both Samba and NFS setups.

In ubuntu, on any machine, navigate to the directory you want to share, right click on it, and select relevant share permissions. Ubuntu has SAMBA built in.
