how to connect to VPN?

hello,

I am moving to another flat so I had to quit my former ISP (cable TV). At the new place two guys came today and conected my flat to the net. However it worked only when using windows, not ubuntu. They told me that what I have at home now is called VPN and I need some particular stuff fot it to work in ubuntu. I think they were trying to be helpful but since I could not use Synaptic to download anything we reached no conclusion as to what has to be done. What I remember I had to install was "PPTP" and "MS Chap v2' (among others). Can you help me and explain what has to be done? MS Chap seems to be Microsoft app, so is there any equivalent?

I did some search on it but apparently I am too much of a newbie since I found no solution.
I use ubuntu 5.04.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Hi
first things first, is it a DSL or cable connection? If cable, it should just work, if it is DSL, it uses PPPOE or PPPOA which linux can control too.
If it is DSL, i would really recommend a router, you can set the PPP access up in it, and it will get you online, then windows and linux will not need any extra setup. I have qwest DSL, which uses PPPOA, but the modem/router from qwest handles all this, so all i do is plug in and go....

I am sorry but I do not quite got it. Until now I used just to plug a net cable into my laptop and it just worked so I never waorrid about some PPP something.
I am not really sure what is it. We have an radio-receiver on top of our house. Some people from company which runs it came and connected my flat to the receiver. I expected it would work just as usually, after i plug the cord in, however under Windows they had to create a new connection which i need to run everytime I boot Windows. Under Linux - the apparently were not sure how to do it, bedides we could not downloas anything under linux since there were no internet connection under linux (I can download files under windows and then copy them to Linux partition, but I do not know what do I need to set up.
DSL or cable? I do not how, how does it show? I am afraid it is neither (can it be so?) since they told me it is "VPN". anyway, I do nt have any modem at my flat, just a cord from net-plug to my PC.

If anybody knows how to do it under any other distro, please tell me anyway. I might change my distro for that reason since there is consoderable difference in prices offered by the two competitive ISP (cable is 100% more expensive than this strange VPN thing).
