How to connect to Internet using LAN

When I browse using firefox I am prompted for the proxy user and password to connect to ethernet.It works ok-I am able to browse the web in firefox.
I want to do apt-get on the console.How do I connect to the internet ?I tried but since I did not enter any user data(username and password) apt-get did not work.
Please help.

Hi

Add a line like this to your /etc/apt/apt.conf:
acquire:: http:: proxy "http: //username: password@proxy: port"

edit : looks like the site is formating my : and / as a smiley so Ive added extra spaces
