First of all, Linux nebie here. I am a first year Comp Sci student and am just starting to get into Linux and learn the system.

Our computers in the linux lab log directly into the school linux server, which is sun1.sjfc.edu

How can I set my personal desktop (in my dorm room) to be able to do the same? Please explain and give references if possible.

Just FYI I am running Red Hat, but I don't think that matters. I know how to connect via Telnet in a terminal, but I want to be able to log directly in when logging into my system. Also, is there a way to choose what your logging into? For instance can I choose between logging into the school sun1.sjfc.edu or my own local machine?

If any of this sounds confusing remember, I am new to linux and obviously have a lot to learn. I have a will to learn though, so over time I feel I can definitly handle it.

These are questions not really for anyone that doesn't know anything about how your schools network is setup, etc. You probably better off asking the IT staff, even someone that looks over the school's lab to connect from your own computer. I would imagine they don't block students using the school's connection in the dorms though.
