Question How to configure two network cards on RH linux 8.0

I want to setup squid proxy server on the machine running red hat Linux 8.0. So I have installed two NICs for the same. They are detected by system as 1) Compex's RL100-ATX 10/100 [driver winbond 840] and 2) Dlink's RTL8139 Ethernet [driver 8139too]. Is the drive selection correct ? Now, how to give pvt ip address and public ip address to them? Whether eth0 or eth1 should be configured for public ip address? Where ip address of Gateway for public ip address should be entered? Do I need to make any changes in the squid.conf file? I have tried it but unable to do. 'ping' to both public and pvt ip addresses is successful. But it can not 'ping' to gateway of public ip address? What does it mean? So I am connected to internet through another proxy of my lab. This proxy also used the same gateway. Please help me. Thanks in advance.
