How to configure squid.conf when it is functional?


I am using Squid server on my Red Hat Linux machine.Squid is functional and clients are access through proxy.I want to ask that if I want to open my squid.conf file for any changes should i first stop squid and then do the changes .
what is the proper way ?

You can change config file. It will not activate your new configuration until you restart or reload

service squid reload
SQUID_OPTS=${SQUID_OPTS:-"-D"}
$SQUID $SQUID_OPTS -k reconfigure

service squid restart
basically service stop and start

thanks for the reply. Well the following lines are a bit technical for me. can you explain it.

Code:
SQUID_OPTS=${SQUID_OPTS:-"-D"}
$SQUID $SQUID_OPTS -k reconfigure
yes I know it is service start and stop .
please just guide me the above

I had compiled squid from source and use following command to refresh squid.conf configuration changes while squid keep running:

/usr/local/squid/sbin/squid -k reconfigure

If you installed from an rpm then please verify your squid path and then issue the switch "-k reconfigure" just as i had typed above.
