Question How to configure an ADSL connection with authentication?

I am using Mandrake 10.0 and my adsl connection requires authentication. When I was configuring the adsl connection didn't appear the option to put my login and password. How can I configure that properly? Where should I put my login and password?

Ok, modem type, configuration method? Eg Speedtouch 300 USB without the Mandrake drivers, not the speedtouchconf script. Or Sagem F@ST 800 E2T with DrakConnect/MCC.

I am quite confuse about that because I was using Fedora Core 2 before changed to Mandrake 10.0 and it was so easy to configure my adsl connection there. I did it just using the graphical interface. I didn't have to edit any file and I didn't have to know my modem type. What happened here is that my connection is limited by month, that's why I need to connect, so they can monitor how much I've been spending. In FC2 I've just click in add a new connection, chose xDSL, chose eth0 and put my login and password in the box that appeared. Every time that I wanted to connect to the internet, I've just have to active that connection and it did the authentication by itself. But in Mandrake 10.0, there isn't such an option. When I click in add a new connexion, I choose Adsl, then I choose eth0 and that's all, doesn't appear a place to put my login and password. But anyway, my modem type is Adsl Router Pots TelKon.

Ok so it's an ethernet connected router, which means as long as your ethernet card is supported ok we just have to deal with pppoe. Firstly have you checked you've installed the pppoe package (Roaring Penguin iirc)?
Next, look for /etc/ppp/pap or chat -secrets files. Do they have any username&password entries?

The pppoe package wasn't installed, so I installed and I went to /etc/ppp and found 3 interested files: pppoe.conf, pppoe-server-options and pap-secrets. I'm gonna put them here, then you can check and see what I have to do:

Ok, seems similar to my pppoa setup. Add your given ISP username to the pppoe.conf, and add the line in pap-secrets for your ISP username and password, eg:
Code:
'username@isp.com' * 'password' *
Don't forget the last space and the newline.

Just to check:

1) In the pppoe.conf file is gonna be like this:

original :
# ADSL user name. You may have to supply "@provider.com" Sympatico
# users in Canada do need to include "@sympatico.ca"
# Sympatico uses PAP authentication. Make sure /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
# contains the right username/password combination.
# For Magma, use xxyyzz@magma.ca
USER=

modified:
# ADSL user name. You may have to supply "@provider.com" Sympatico
# users in Canada do need to include "@sympatico.ca"
# Sympatico uses PAP authentication. Make sure /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
# contains the right username/password combination.
# For Magma, use xxyyzz@magma.ca
USER=ricardo@dslmweb.co.za

2) And in the pap-secrets file like this:

original:
#pap-secrets
# Secrets for authentication using PAP
# client server secret IP addresses

modified;
#pap-secrets
# Secrets for authentication using PAP
# client server secret IP addresses
'ricardo@dslmweb.co.za' * 'password' *

Is that right?

I'd like to know if in pppoe.conf I have to use " " or ' ' like USER="ricardo@dslmweb.co.za" and I didn't understand what you mean with the last space and the new line?

Pppoe.conf should be fine without quotes, and I meant there's a space and then a new blank line after the last * in pap-secrets.

OK, it's done. Is it already suppose to work? Because it's no working yet. Actually, there is something strange happening. When I go to Network & Internet and then to Internet Access, in connexion type, appears LAN, instead of adsl and in status appears not connected, but when is booting the kernel, it brought up interface eth0 [OK]. By the way, should I have to do something to active that pppoe configuration?

Yes iirc Mandrake sees the connection as the ethernet/lan between your network card and your router, and the router itself deals with the adsl authentication. As I have a usb modem and no ethernet/lan I dunno if I can help you much more.
