Question how to chat in LAN using ip address

I have implemented a VPN using PPTP as a project in my college.
Please help me overcoming the following problems.
How to chat within the LAN using the ip address? Is it possible to assign from which interface IP address that the packet should be transmitted to the other system? I am using redhat linux version 9.
Also can anyone help me to overcome ftp error 421.It says that the service is not available. I have connected two systems using PPTP prortocol for my project in my college. The ftp service works well with ordinary IPaddress
but not with virtual IP.The ping works well with virtual IP.
