ps, the mtu for your ethernet connections should be 1492

sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu 1492

change the ethx numeral to suit your internal address.

I changed my vm from bridged to NAT and I know get the results that I am after. When I issue the command "iptables -A INPUT -j DROP" the host and vm both lose internet connection.
