For an idea of which ports are open to the world try http://scan.sygatetech.com/

I personally use a firewall script, by Kreiger. The script gives the ability to open (or Not open) ports as required. I forgot the address, try searching in www.google.com.linux for Kreiger firewall script.

Hope this helps

The firewall system in Linux is iptables for Kernel 2.4.x

You can look at the iptables MAN page for more info on how to block ports.
