Question how to access my pc at home from work

my pc is sitting behind a firewall at home
running suse 10.1
the firewall is on the asdl box
i think i have already configure it to open the
ssh and httpvnc ports
and i have stopped my suse's firewall

when i point my brower to my pc's ip
if i am at home, i can access the gdm greeting without prb
but if i am in my office at work
i can get the vnc authentication screen
but when i type in the password
it told me "no route to server"
and i can't login by putty via ssh neither

by contrast, i can access the apache server on my machine

what can i do to use vnc and ssh to access my home pc ?

thanks

For ssh, you need to have sshd running on the server, and you should have a long look at your sshd_config file (probably in /etc/ssh/). There are many ways to connect and they need to agree between client and server.

Are you sure that you're allowed to go out on port 22 from work?

Also try:
ssh user@localhost
on the ssh server - that will at least tell you that the server is running.

For vnc, if you are being asked for a password, does that mean that you are already connected? I know it does on TightVNC. If there's no connection (server running a X session) then I don't get a request for password. How are you trying to reach the vncserver? I understand it is not a good idea to use vnc over the internet because there is no encryption - better to tunnel the vnc port through ssh (yes I know you can't do that until you get ssh going).

You could also maybe check your logs to see if you have any record of attempted connections. Look in /var/log/ (auth.log ?) or look for logs in ~/.vnc
