How should I setup my home network?
Hi everybody,
I heard that Linux was very good for networks and I decided to setup my own home network using it. I'm not an expert with either Linux or Networking so I need some advices. From what I read, SAMBA seems to be a good solution but I didn't found the informations I needed yet.
Here is my current setup:
- cable modem
--- router
----- Windows Vista laptop (wifi)
----- Windows Vista laptop (wifi)
----- Windows XP(ethernet)
------- printer
----- Windows 7/Ubuntu desktop (wifi)
(I used "-" because indentation doesn't work)
*Every computer is connected to the internet via the router
*Only the Windows XP desktop can use the printer
*File sharing is not enabled on any computer
*Backups are only done before formatting a computer
Here is what I want my network to do:
- I want to be able to access my files from every computer connected to the network
- I want to be able to access the network via the internet (remote access or VPN)
- I want backups to be done automatically at regular intervals (on an external computer/hard disk (server)
- I want the printer to be accessible from every computer
Some advices, ideas and HOWTO's to help me configure my home network would be appreciated.
I hope my question is clear enough and don't hesitate to tell me if something is missing or unclear.
Thank You
