How does ping work?

How does ping work?

I am trying to test a laptop ethernet and wirless card, without connecting to network and ensure that my ethernet and wireless card are working?

Question is when I ping my local IP address, are all the TCP/ip layers tested including the physical layer?

Is pinging local ip address equal to pinging a remote host?

Is pinging loopback same as pining the ip address?

I know a sure way to test localhost network hardware and drivers is to ping the remote host?

However if one wants to ensure localhost network hardware (i.e. ethernet card and wireless card) and local network card drivers are functioning how can one guarantee that with having to connect to a network?
