How does DNSMadeEasy or TZO.com redirect www to :xxx TCP port

I had used TZO.com for years to redirect web requests to dynamically addressed servers, then expanded to numerous web servers on the same Linux server using different port numbers. Several years ago I switched from TZO to DNSMadeEasy as they offered 50 domains for $29.99 per year. They doubled the annual charge to $59.99 a couple of years ago then last year the ultimate insult, cutting my 50 domains back to 25 changing my "professional" service level to a "business" service level. Effectively, they've increased my cost 400% in 3 years.

Someone recommended DNSExit claiming their URL Port forwarding service was free but 4 days after migrating one domain I got an invoice from them for $6.99 per year.

I am tired of being nickeled and dimed by these providers and want to 1) set my Linux server up as DNS server for multiple customer domains and 2) do my own URL port forwarding.

I set up BIND with one domain but when I went to GoDaddy to change the DNS server it said the server was "not registered".

Can someone tell me how I go about "registering" a name server and the other two items above?

You should be able to register name servers at your registrar.

As for the URL/ port forwarding you would have to setup a proxy server. If your just doing port forwarding for http then you can use a number of things. Apache, nginx, and varnish are all capable of reverse proxying. Im not sure about varnish but you could use apache or nginx to do a redirect as well. That would give you the ability to "mask" your url redirection or just do a standard redirection.
