actually my first post was correct as well but i wasnt logged in as root user. So that was why most the commands didnt work. Thank you for your help everyone. You guys at linuxquestions.org are great. THANK YOU!!!!

You mean we went thru all that trouble and you didn't tell us you weren't root from the beginning.... hehe.. just messin withya.
