How do you kick some intruder out?

I got hacked the other day while IRCing, I tried to chat with the intruder (it was an old pc I have at home not sensible data on it) using the talk command but he didn't answer, then I decided to kick him out but didn't know how to do it.

How can you terminate a user, in this case an unwanted intruder once he gets inside your system.?

How about killing the processes he's running. Like for example the one he's using to connect to your machine.
Or just set your firewall to deny all packets from his ip address.
