How do you configure a router?

I've got a D-Link DSS-5+ broadband router and I don't know how to configure it. The manual isn't any help. I'm trying to get my DSL modem hooked into the network, but have had no success whatsoever.

I *think* I'm supposed to set everything up like a proxy, but I don't know the IP address of the router, and I don't know how to set the router so it won't use DHCP.

hi Travis86
I think the setup generally is through web based. try typing in http://192.168.0.1 hope it helps

http://192.168.0.1 didn't work. The router showed no signs of activity. Bummer.

Here's the link to the DSS-5+'s manual:
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Switch/dss5+/Man..._manual_G1.pdf

Thanks for helping but, really, it says nothing.

For what it's worth, I have a linksys and access it via 192.168.1.1

Travis86 01-20-2003 08:33 PM

192.168.1.1 didn't work for my D Link. :(

Grim Reaper 01-20-2003 08:40 PM

hmm, in theory you should be able to ping it then?

got a portscanner handy?

scan the ranges of:
192.168.0.0 to 192.168.1.255 and see what hosts are active, then do trial and error till you hit the right one...

Googling brought me here. This person seems to have your switch.

Also I found this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...140281-3512154

Anyway, the point is, I think it's a switch. I don't know if there is a difference between a router a switch, however if there is, that might be why you are having some problems.

:)

Cool

Travis86 01-20-2003 09:25 PM

Yes, it says on the box it's a switch. I bought the switch instead of the router because the router had the same diagram on the back, but cost more.

From your links, it looks like everyone could get theirs to work. I must be missing something....

Also, I think Grim is right. I need a port scanner. I guess I'll check the hacker sites. (GR8, 1'm Turn1ng n2 a h4x0r n0vv).
