How do I install and use an external modem with Ubuntu 8.10

All I want to do is use the external V.92 modem connected to one of the serial ports on my PC to do a dial-up connection to MSN and use FireFox.

This appears to be a major issue with Ubuntu and alike. I don't have kppp. I have tried making a pppconfig file, but whaT do I do with it?

I need some straight step-by-step instructions. Please do not assume I know anything beyond the very basics.

I haven't got Ubuntu 8, only 7. All I did with my USB modem was configure wvdial with command: sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf. I'm pretty sure wvdial was already installed. Then edit the /etc/wvdial.conf file to include ISP information and remove ' ;' at the beginning of those three ISP lines, save the file and issue command: sudo wvdial to dial out.

To edit the /etc/wvdial.conf file issue command: sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf and enter root password to open the editor.
