Angry How do i get usb cable to work on mandrake 9.0

I have been trying for days now to configure my internet for Mandrake 9.0

Is there a way to get my internet up and running on mandrake 9.0 with a usb that hooks into my cable modem. Redhat 9.0 allows me to connect but in a wierd way and gives me bunches of problems. And dont ask me why i did absolutly nothing, all i did was follow the books orders on how to install redhat and it randomly restarts, logs out and i need to log back in, or freezes, and sometimes during bootup cant find files unlike last bootup when it did.... but im forced to use this glitchy redhat because it automatically configures the internet and very well for my usb connection.

How would i get my usb connection to my cable internet to work on Mandrake 9.0? Ive tried configuring the internet connection in the settings but it asks for a host or somthing without a period... wtf is that. and what do i do!!!!

If i could just get internet on mandrake linux i luuuv mandrake linux'x setup and could get used to it....

Oh and could someone help me out on how to access root??? Im a windows switched to linux user and need help figuring these things out hehe.
-muchos gracias-

First of all if you setup Mandrake 9 you would have had to type in a password for root twice- if you remember this then
Login = root
Password= your password

As for getting your internet setup frankly I am surprised that Mandrake did not see it ?
You sayyou have USB connection - this I would assume a usb external modem? And you say it is connected directly to your box-
and it did not detect the modem? DO you have a nic in your box?
I am at lost as to why it would even need toknow what type of modem you have if you are using Lan connection.
HMMMM

I have installed numerous and all of them have found mine and it comes through a router which is nice because it also serves as my DHCP server.
I heard a long time ago they had problems with ATT going to USB Modems but they fixed pretty quick.

The only other thing I might suggest is that you look at your Windows configuration and try to make it look the same in Linux after you get into root of course.
Good Luck

yes it is an external modem and has the normal connections cable (like cable television cable), cable as in cad5, usb, and power. It is always plugged in and RedHat is the only one ive not had to do anything to configure it.

Thanks for the info on how to get to root... now i can install Wine and some other stuff MUAHAHAHAHA! *cough cough*

If you like Mandrake or RH try SuSE 8.2 Pro this distro ROCKS
By the way SuSE is to release the first Network Desktop for an Insurance company in Germany the roll out will consist of 1300 computers but the design has been test for 100,000 desktop in topolgy now that ROCKS. THhis desktop distro will have Open office 6, all kinds of goodies to help folks convert or still Microshft Office, and of course all the spped and relaibilty of Linux.
And it was so sad M$ lost it contract with Munich because they are going with Linux servers and Desktops care to guess which Distro....

SuSe im guessin because you said it rocks?

lol i havent tried SuSe out yet but my friend has it and i might... but for right now Mandrake is to my standards easy. Im such a computer geek making everything look so hard when it isnt in Mandrake. But this internet thing is a pain right now. In about to reinstall it and see if i can configure it right.... dont know why it has problems in the first place, but ill keep tryin.... if all else fails ill just reinstall redhat :P and hope i can get more info on how to fix it grrrrrrrr......
