how do I configure an ip address for ubuntu?

The configuration is completely different than any other version of linux i've used.

Note: it's exactly the same as on any Debian-based distro. And if you use the GUI (Networkmanager), it's the same as most modern distros.

You don't tell us much, but it's similar to Debian.

The settings are in /etc/network/interfaces.
