Hostnames in Windows internal network

The network at my university is driven primarily by Windows--users have "N drives" and the like, and everyone makes use of samba shares. Relatedly, everyone is told to set a computer name and domain name.

Those running windows can be pinged used the string "ping computer_name.domain_name" and their IP can be found. I'm running linux and this doesn't seem to work for me--others just can't resolve my address.

So, what kind of software are the Windows users running that makes this possible, and is there any way I can get this functionality on my Linux system?

As I was explained, Linux doesn't register itself in Windows DNS and DCHP doesn't do that either. Try to access your machine using IP. If it's obtain the same IP every time you can even provide it in hosts file to reduce typing.

Interesting. Thanks, MOCKBA.

I actually *do* use an entry in /etc/hosts for myself. I wanted others to have the more rememberable address, too. More than anything though I'm just curious.

Add your *hostname* desired to your ifcfg-XXXX file, for example;

DHCP_HOSTNAME='This_is_my_Linux_box'
