hostname breaks printconf-gui
 

I thought I'd give my new linux box a new hostname. After I did that,
printconf-gui broke. Something about Xlib: connection to "0:0" refused or something. I googoled that, found it had something to do with hostname, set up my host name to be localhost.localdomain like 'twas originally and poof printconf-gui is all good again.

What I'm really trying to do is share an IPP printer on the Linuxx box with a PC running Windoze. And it said Windoze likes it better if the box it's speaking IPP to has a name rather than IP addy. I read somewhere that you can do this, and IPP sounds like a much cleaner solution than samba, which, let's face it is a glorified hack. so that's why I gave it a name.

and no luck with sharing the printer.
I first tried to share the regular printer, then I decided since I have the driver installed here on the PC I could use it as a raw printer.
Any help??

No, lets not face it. Samba allows interfacing an international standard with a propretary one, and does it quite well. Obviously your personally developed solution didn't work (Oh, you just downloaded it and didn't try to roll your own?), or you wouldn't be whining about Samba. IP addresses work fine on my network under both Samba and IPP. So I would suggest a little more in-depth study into what 'connection to 0:0 refused' is telling you.

FYI I have fought with samba for a long time and have tried repeated to roll my own. It is always painful. And from the number of posts here and elsewhere about it I am far from the only one who has troubles with it. It is not what I do for a living on a daily basis. There are tons of people who know more about it than I do that is why I come here, is to get a problem solved, not to show everybody my big technodick. It seems to me logically like if there is a platform independent internet printer protocol that all OS's can speak that would be the way to go.

But I'm happy to use whatever will work to share this printer.
And you, rather than offer anything helpful, you just deliver a put down.
Really smart people usually don't do that.
