i'm kind of a noob so please dont be offended by the stupidity of my question. any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. ok, i'm currently using sbc yahoo dsl (with dynamic ips) and i want to create a domain and host it myself so that my family can use it to create webpages for themselves and also i want to run a email/webmail so that my family can get email all that good stuff. and for myself i personnally would like to be able to get on irc with my own domain. i know i can already do all this kind of stuff with a dyndns.org type of service but i want to really own my own and host my own domain. i would greatly appreciate any tips as to how to go about asking my isp to get me started, and any other tips and advice as to how i can get this up and running. Thank you very much for your time!
Hello,
I think you might have the 2 confused. You can own your own/admin your own domain thru one of the domain registering companies. Sorry, none of them come to mind - but they register your info and you OWN www.xxxxxxxxx.com/org/us/etc,,,,
Now, what you are looking for from your provider is something kinda different. You have to have this domain registered with a DNS provider. In order to do this you are going to need a static IP; you currently have a dynamic. To get a static from your provider you need $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ - there is a reason that line is so long. It costs more money than I think you realize for 1 static IP. It would be cheaper to use one of the dynamic updaters. In fact, some of them don't even have to reference their domain in the name. From what I hear they work pretty good. I am looking into getting one as soon as I can get my stuff off the ground!
just use dyndns, or dns2go or something... you get to choose the first part of your domain name then you choose the last bit from a list, and it's all free, how can you get better than that?
>i personnally would like to be able to get on irc with my own domain.
For that you need reverse DNS, i.e. you need a lookup on your numeric ip address to point to a domain name of your choice. That is totally in the control of your ISP.
Having a domain name point to your ip won't make that your IRC hostname.
zaphodiv, i know about that already... i was just wondering like how i should go about asking my isp to help me out with this. because i asked them twice already, and twice they tell me that i'm not being clear enough for them to understand. o well maybe i shold switch to a different isp when my contract is up then maybe i'll get some better response. well thanks alot everyone for replying so quickly.
i dont know where abouts u are, but here in the UK i have 5 static IPs for my network from my ISP and they where all free for my home ADSL talk abotu good service
then i just set my router to route each IP to each PC i needed a static on. for ur domain i cant help mutch there never bin down that route but just through ilet u know static IPs dont have to cost $$$$$$$$ if u are in the UK i guess.
