I'm using fedora 6 and was wondering how I would go about settting the machine's name so that I don't have to refer to it's ip address when connecting from other machines (both win and linux). Thanks!
Setting the hostname on a computer wont allow other computer to refer to it as such. You will either need to setup a DNS server, or make entries in your hosts file for all the devices on the network.
You need to configure your /etc/hosts file . In that you will add the IP address of your machine , the full domain name and the alias name ,
once done that , the name will be always resolved to that IP address .
Also , you can issue the command hostname <your computers name> that will put a name to your computer but it will be not recognize in the net until you cofigure the file /etc/hosts
