DHCP is overwriting it. There's something that you can add to your DHCP configuration that will prevent writing of the search attribute, but I can't remember OTTOMH.

I see that you have a bunch of loopback (127.0.0.1) entries in your /etc/hosts file, and I assume those are your host name(s)? Are you sure that's what your machine is called? Is that what's listed in the networking section of Mandrake Control Center? Another problem I had with my box was that it kept sending DNS queries for its own hostname to my ISP's DNS server whenever I started an X application. So everytime my connection was down, or whenever the DNS server was slow, it would take a long time to start anything because it would wait for each resolve to time out. It turned out that I didn't have an entry for my own host name in my /etc/hosts (duh!). I know your problem is with long resolve times from any web browser, but you never know.
