Hiding IP in IRC (Slightly OT)

Hi All,

While not directly Linux related, I am sure some of you guys will be able to help.

I'd like to be able to connect to IRC with out peopl seeing my IP address.

How would I go about doing this? I've heard the term vhost thrown about but I am not sure exactly what it is.

Thanks

"vhost" stands for "vanity host". It's a domain name you can use when you're connected to a server that offers them for use in IRC. Instead of connecting as "omg@AOL.com" you can be "omg@this.stuff.sucks.doesnt.it". If you think this allows you to muck around and do bad sh*t, think again.

Thanks for replying.

So if someone used a vhost what would you see when they connected - just an obscure domain?

From your last comment, I take it still possible to discover someones real IP even though they are using a vhost - Is this correct?

Finally, is this IRC server specific? Would it be possible to jsut connect through a vhost by default? Also, what setting should I be looking for to do this?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am having trouble understanding! Do you have any good links on the topic?

Thanks
