Question help with firestarter firewall

hello all,
this is a two part question about firestarter. first some bacground-
i have a lan set up , currently sharing dsl thru win xp ics, everything working fine. i have samba server working, xp clients can access linux
pcs and vice versa. i mention this cause this would indicate that tcp/ip,
physical connections, etc are working.
i want to use firestarter as firewall and nat. firestarter is installed, seems to be working(the gui window says its running, i did some port scans and got different and better results compared to redhat 8.0 basic firewall.
first question- the gui window shows absoutely no "hits". no firewall can be that good?
2nd question- under win ics, clients should have dns set to same ip as gateway machine. firestarter's manual says clients should have dns set
to dns ip found in /etc/resolv.conf of firewall machine. i got the name server address(es) from /etc/resolv.conf and entered them as my client dns entry, but still cant connect. i also tried using dns address as same as gateway address, no luck. and yes, i checked the settings in firestarter,
they look good. any help getting te nat thing going would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

oh yeah, further info- external connection is ppp0, which i start
after boot. internal is eth0. i guess i could set the internet to connect on boot if thats the answer to nat, but i prefer controlling internet connection manually. i did tell firestarter to activate on "dial up" in the wizard thingy,
but i note it does try to activate on boot.
