help please no internet
i am new at linux so please tell me what i can understand. i updated linux by clicking that red circle and up2date box now it gave me this message "Your system is currently running kernel-2.6.9-1.667, but the newest installed kernel is kernel-2.6.10-1.760_FC3. It is recommended that you reboot at this first opportunity to test this new kernel." i did all this i rebooted it gave me a choice i booted the new kernel the internet isnt working using the same network setup i had from before. i tried using my wireless device. then i tried using an eithernet cord plugged into the back, neither worked. i want to use this newer version of linux that is installed (new kernel) can anyone help u can also send me a message on aim, yahoo, msn, and icq.
1. We might assume that your LQ username is the same username for all those messengers, but we know what assuming does.
2. Besides updating for the sake of updating, is there a reason you need the 2.6.10. I haven't seen anything that would make me move to it yet.
3. do an ls mod to see if it loaded your card's module. You may have to make it yourself.
4. try ifconfig and iwconfig as maybe the module is loaded and the setting are not.

you don't need to get rid of it. If nothing else, use it to learn how to compile. There were a lot of driver updates in the 2.6.10 changelog as well as other changes, but nothing that would have benefited me. If your hardware worked under 2.6.9, then it will work under 2.6.10 so those driver updates aren't the issue. As I stated, it likely that the module for your network card didn't load, or the ESSID and encryption key for you network weren't loaded.
lsmod is a command to list all modules(drivers) loaded you can execute the command from anywhere. Its likely you'll need to be root. It's all one command, not ls mod, my bad on typing that way.

I haven't played with redhat for quite some time, but that is really strange. I've used lsmod in every distro that I've played with and its always worked.
