I just installed Fedora 5 to my machine. There is a network card built-in, but it shows "inactive." When I attempt to activate it shows: "Determining IP information for eth0...failed."
I'm using a motorola surfboard cable modem to connect. Please help!
Sounds like you need to install the driver for your network card. If it's integrated in your motherboard you'll have to go to their website and download and install the driver. In Linux it's kind of a process, but there should be a "read me" file included that will give you instructions on how to install it. Once you do that and re-boot, you should be able to activate it. I have an ASUS board and Fedora 5 detected it no problem, so you must have a special card that's better
I tried to troubleshoot my problem by adding a NIC and it will not activate either. They show as hardware - Linksys NC100 and 3Com , but neither will activate. I don't know if I need to change IP, DNS, Host ?!? I can only assume that the cards are recognized and I don't need to search for a driver.
Having same problem with my built in ether net for fedora core 5
I'm dual booting winxp and fedora core 5 and during the intitial startup it says fail. I'm new to linux so any help would be nice thanks
I did research on my MB and found this site http://www.emachine-upgraders.info/d...ck8mc51g.shtml I search for a driver for it every way possible and couldn't find one even for windows XP. any help would be appreciated
Most Linux Distros, nowadays, have the 3COM drivers for Ethernet PCI Cards. Is the Ethernet Card that is a 3COM device a PCI Ethernet Card by 3COM? If so, check and see if the module is loaded. I use 3COM 3c905b, and the driver is 959, not 905 as it would appear to be. Try "ifconfig -a" and "ifconfig" for YOUR IP. Try "lspci" and "modprobe" for details on activation. Or "insmod" for more data. YOU might see some clues in BIOS for the tweeking necessary to troubleshoot the Ethernet resolution. Try to configure one NIC at a time. The BIOS will allow YOU to enable/disable the on-board NIC, if YOU have a PCI NIC to use. I've personally had better performance enabling the PCI Cards than the on-board devices.
