help Bringing up eth0 [ failed ]

I'm trying to link a linux box (mandrake 9.1) with our windows network so we can do all our cd/dvd data pressing on a stable machine. However this is the first time i've ever tried to network a linux box to a windows network and i'm having no success at all. The windows network is on an ip range of 10.10.10.x with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. We have one dhcp server allocating the ip address'. I've tried changing the ip address of the linux box using linuxconf and i cannot ping anyother machines at all. At boot i get the message Bringing up eth0 [ failed ] any ideas? what a i doing wrong do people need more info etc
Cheers
Big Al

Your network mask is incorrect.
For a 10.x.x.x network, the subnet mask is 255.0.0.0
