Heartbeat through serial ports

I have some questions. If anyone can answer at least one or point me to some documentation, it would be greatly appreciated.

I want to setup heartbeat through two computers.

Would it be better to do it through serial or ethernet?

Is listening to /dev/ttyS0 and redirecting the output to a file the only way to write to a file through serial connection?

Can you get heartbeat programs?

I have googling for the last couple days without much luck.
