having problems accessing other windows pc's on network
Hi
We have small network in office. now using a belkin G wirless router/modem, x2 pc's with vista(I Know don't say it) and me using Linux.
Both pc's work fine on net and talking to each other. My linux system however, net access fine, networking with others not working. Thw windows pcs are wireles and I am wired to the router. I have tried adding a freecom storage gateway to the system using a crossover cable, net still works but error message when I try to access network is
"unable to mount location" failed to retrieve shared list from device.
Also, the freecom won't let me access it's settings using the standard IP via linux, it says that it is valid but unable to connect.
1) I, too, have trouble getting linux (Ubuntu) to see and play nice with home network ("win-doze workgroup") workstations for file and print services. Most of the win-tel boxes are "windows XP pro", but there is one Vista something.
2) From years past, I remember that win-doze networks can take almost forever to notice that the network membership has changed. Sadly, I cannot find the reference materials that told me enough to solve my troubles way back then.
3) I also have the symptom that the win-doze boxes see that there are other computers present within the workgroup but each workstation cannot browse those same workstations looks for shared resources.
4) Again from years past, I remember that every workstation on a windows workgroup network must have the same set of username+password accounts as every other workstation. I know, too, that samba can accomplish mappings from *nix login accounts to and from some other account for share access purposes.
QUESTION: Can someone share (sic) the settings needed on the win-doze side so that a windows workgroup network does file and print sharing among a small group of win-XP and win-Vista workstations?
QUESTION: Can someone tell me the settings needed so that a linux+SAMBA workstation can join and play within the same windows workgroup network?
QUESTION: Can someone explain how to configure a network enabled multi-function printer so that both win-doze and linux workstation can use the same printer and printer features?
After a lot of playing and pulling my hair out I have finaly got it to work!!!
It was not easy... I upgraded to ubuntu 9.04 this helped a great deal as samba seemed to pick it all up for me including the printers.
However, I had to install the share modules(which 9.04 sorts out for you when you change the properties of the file to share)
I also have linux hardwired to a staorage gateway then hardwired to a wireless router. The windows pcs are wirless to the router. All machines now see each other but one annoying thing is that you must allow access to the linux m/c via windows this is especially with Vista. Unlike windows networks. Ubuntu requires you allocate sharing to the areas you want on the network as windows however allows access to whole m/c at one if you want it too.
It is very stable though and does allow greater security.

This is what I found and it works.

Thank you for this declaration of success, but it does not shed much light on what needs to happen or, more importantly, what I and others need to do. If you can't provide a detailed HOWTO, it might be nice to provide a "top ten list" [without any homage to David Letterman] of bullet points.

Are you saying that the linux workstations need "fixed IP address" configurations for windows networking inter-operation? In a strange way that might even make some sense... If that is a requirement"
Code:
Rule 1: Any linux/SAMBA server must have a fixed IP address on the LAN where win-doze workstations will access "shares."
Rule 2: An linux/SAMBA client must have fixed IP address on the LAN where they offer access to "shares."
Rule 3: ... etc ...
QUESTION: When you write "m/c" do you mean micro computer?
