Question Have problems with DNS(Linux)- only on windows clients...

Hi there
if I do a ping from any UNIX machine in our network- lets say

ping ts1

it will work out-

But- if I'm going to do the same thing on my windows clients- it will not work out- until i do the ping with the full domain name
like:
ping ts1.ourdomain.com

so- what do the UNIX machine's know what the other machine's do not know- or what changes must I make on my dns server- so that even the windows machines will get it?

(Am I making myself "sort of" clear?)

Cheers
Senta

a search domain i'd guess. There's probably an entry in /etc/resolv.conf saying "search ourdomain.com". this is set on windaz somewhere in network configuration...

It will depend on what domain your workstation is in. It will only search the domain you are currently in. If you are in the correct domain (eg ourdomain.com) and you ping ts1 it should append (unless your network settings tell it not to) and ping ts1.ourdomain.com. However, if you are not in any domain then it probably won't know to search ourdomain.com. What you can do is go to your network neighborhood properties, tcp-ip properties and add ourdomain.com as a "search domain". This will work for both Win9x and Win2k/XP. Hope this helps

Windows needs some specific settings for it to work with DNS. What version of Windows are you using? We can review the settings.

Yes- !
It worked! So - simple but I was looking on the "wrong" end :-)
We work with all kinds of windoof's machines- on every win-system the setting is made in a slightly different place- but found them all quick quick.

Thanks a lot for all your help!
