has anyone tried this??? Reverse dns lookups with Class A addresses..
i am trying to connect a xp machine and RHEL 4 machine, which hosts DNS server.
i want my windows machine to look up for name resolution from my linux dns server.
secondly i also want to use the same domain name for my windows machine
my machine is resolving both way for class C address. but, when i was using class A address for name lookup ; reverse lookup was not possible then. has anyone tried using class A address for reverse lookup also?
A DNS (Domain Name Server) server resolves names (IE www.linuxquestions.org or gaim.sourceforge.net).
It does however not resolve IP addresses. It returns them as a result of a name search.
If you want to see a machine that is on a different IP block you will have to change your subnet setting or better forward it (like a router).
I think you're missing an in-addr.arpa zone file. Your DNS server (I'm assuming BIND here can perform both forward and reverse lookups, but whilst the forward lookup zone is obvious, the reverse zone isn't.
You probably need to create an in-addr.arpa zone for your class A set. Try googleing for reverse lookup zones or in-addr.arpa
