I just installed a Gigabit Router now I would like to upgrade the home hardwired Ethernet network to a Gigabit network by adding gigabit Ethernet cards. So which (hardwired) gigabit Ethernet card (adapter) would be recommend for a computer running Ubuntu 10.10????
The intel pro cards tend to be both good from a driver side but also they are good devices with many enterprise level features. Tests I have seen show they reduce cpu time.
I have Intel 82573L in laptop and it is total crap. Actually I tried it with my desktop, which happens to have Gigabit on ForceDeth (MAC) and RealTek 8169 (PHY) and actually intel card was severally limiting bandwidth and consuming whole CPU power, while forcedeth/realtek didn't really use CPU to extend of being noticable.
I recommend realtek cards. I have an Intel gigabit card, but I had to disable the e1000e driver, because it caused the computer to hang on shutdown. I've never had any problems with any realtek card, gigabit, 100/10, or wifi.
Thanks for suggesting Realtek Ethernet cards. I had already placed the order for the Intel PRO/1000, so I am, for now committed. If the Intel PRO/1000 does not work-out, there is now an alternative solution.
Good news. The card works! The computer that I have is dual boot, so I got it working first in WindowsXP. Then rebooted into Ubuntu and the card immediately worked. Unbelievable. Usually I have to frantically find some solution. Well knock-on-wood. I probably jinxed myself.
