gFTP is slow compared to Mozilla dowload

I started downloading a cd image with Mozilla and got a estimated download time of 2 1/2 hours. When I try downlaoding the same file with gFTP it takes around 5 hours.

Does Mozilla use HTTP for all dowloads? If it uses FTP can you tell it to use binary and not ascii mode?

Is gFTP slower cos of the FTP protocol and it's error checking?

Cheers
TD
