Getting NFS to work (AIX client/Linux server)

Hi. I'm having a problem trying to get my Linux box to serve one directory to my RS/6000 running AIX. The AIX server is sort of old and has a 6 gig SCSI hard drive, and I would like to supplement its storage capacity by putting an /opt directory on there, shared from my Linux box with plenty of space.

It seems that no matter what I do with /etc/exports, hosts.deny, hosts.allow, when I try to mount the volume on the AIX box, it either gives me an error about file permissions permissions or 'operation not permitted'.

This is the current entry in /etc/filesystems for the shared directory on the AIX system:

/mnt/test:
dev = "/share/opt"
vfs = nfs
nodename = 10.0.0.1
mount = false
options = ro,fg,hard,intr,rsize=1024,wsize=1024,vers=2,proto=udp
account = false

This is /etc/exports

/share/opt 10.0.0.2(rw,sync)

Try without the "sync" portion in your exports file like this:

/share/opt 10.0.0.2(rw)

And what are the permissions on the share itself?

You could try the following for debugging purposes :

1. Can the Linux box NFS mount /share/opt to itself (obviously after you've amended /etc/exports).
2. Can the AIX box MFS mount a directory to itself?

This might give you a clue as to which side the problem lies.

Have you put in the real IP addresses? NFS is sensitive to IP addresses/host names being just right. For example, if you tell your Linux box that host "aix" is allowed to mount the NFS directory, but you use DNS and DNS resolves the IP address to "aix.mycompany.com" then it won't work (and will give the error message you mention).
