Hi guys,

I'm having problems trying to get on-line using my Huawei E220 USB modem with Debian Lenny (testing).

This modem works fine on the same machine (Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo laptop) when booted into Windows XP so it must be a configuration issue.

I get no recognition of it whatsoever in Debian (kernel version 2.6.26-1-686) despite repeatedly plugging in and unplugging it.
I was under the impression this kernel natively supported the E220 but since it doesn't recognise it AT ALL, I went back to Windows and tried downloading a driver from Vodafone/Betavine which is supposed to work.

Having done so and booted back into Debian, however, it doesn't seem possible to launch or unpack it! This is the message
I get:

'Could not open "vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux_1.99.17_i386.deb" - archive type not supported'

Trying to run it as Root from the console (as suggested in the driver's supporting documentation) just results in the following
message:

bash: vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux: command not found

So I'm baffled. Networking has never been my strong suit. What should I try next??

dpkg -i vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux_1.99.17_i386.deb

Well, I tried! Unfortunately (and astonishingly) the Lenny CD I was operating from doesn't seem to have dpkg incorporated in it. Seemingly not the Python dependencies that ISTR dpkg requires, either. I'm therefore downloading the full DVD for the sake of simplicity (it's taking AGES: 17hrs so far and only one-third done!) and will report back when I've tried installing with that.
