general network apache questions
Hola, LQ folks!
I have a couple blatantly newbie questions about setting up a linux/apache webserver on a win2000 network. After upgrades, we had a spare machine at work. I wiped it clean and installed Redhat 9 with the 'everything' option. My eventual goal is to develop a small, stripped down php groupware sort of thing so that we have a central place to track the progress of certain jobs. In taking baby steps towards that goal, I have successfuly connected the RH machine to our network. I can reach the apache server from my desk by typing the webserver IP address into the browser address box. I don't get anything but the apache 'successful install' screen, but you got to remember, I am taking baby steps. So: 1) I want to be to reach the webserver by typing in a name instead of an ip address. How can I do that? 2) Reaching the webserver via IP obviously only works on my little intranet. What is involved in being able to reach it from the Internet? In both cases, I have rough understanding about what needs to be done, but the how of it is a little beyond me. I appreciate any suggestions and commments. I have a feeling that getting past this part will help me with my other side project at work, vnc so I can access my work machine from home and vice versa. Any comments and suggestions appreciated- thanks! Danny |
1) You will need to add an entry for your server in your LAN's DNS server.
2) Assuming you are using a private IP range on your LAN, you'll need some NAT/PAT settings on your border device (router or firewall) |
