Gateway + Caching Server
Hi all,
I am getting static IP from my service provider through fiber cable. Now I want to setup a Firewall and caching server and allow 150 Lan users to run my service but want to reject other mac's than these of 150 users. How I can do this.
Is smoothwall or IPCOP or another gateway good. What if I want to use monowall or pfsense with squid. How can I do this also and how can I restrict my users to use 18kb/s data.Waiting for Linux guru replies.
all four there should do you fine. i know ipcop and smoothwall, but looking outside of linux based ones, pfsense gets *very* good reviews compared to ipcop and sw. as for how you do each thing, well you use the tools as part of the gateway installation. ipcop for one has a lot of additional modules like the advproxy suite which can add very specific tweaks and enhancements.
as above, if you are using these packaged gatway distributions, you use the features within them to achieve these goals, whoever they are presented, assuming they are there at all. technically things like mac restriction will be done by iptables, but the point of these distro's is to not need to know the stuff under the hood. also note that mac address filtering is *only* for a local lan. if you have seperate subnets for different machines, they can't be filtered by mac.
