FTP Server..... opening of ports and all that

Im using GuildFTPD to put up an FTP server on my computer, and it got complicated real fast when i ran into my router. For somereason when i set the server port to 21 it give me an error, so i set it to 22 and opened 22 up on the router. Now when i connect it sees the server but the server does not respond. Do i have to do more port opening? If so which ones and how?
